In recent years, pig-butchering scams have been causing more and more serious financial losses to victims, as well as psychological devastation. Recently, a victim from Vietnam told his experience of being cheated, hoping to remind others not to fall victim to the same scam.
When the victim was 32 years old, he had a stable job and a good income, but no romance. Later, he met a 28-year-old Singaporean fund manager at a financial investment forum.
At first, the two men talked about professional topics. But the more they talked, the more they hit it off, and the conversation gradually shifted from the professional to the personal. The two talked through video calls, and said good night to each other. The man could not tell any insincerity in her attitude.
A few months later, the fund manager recommended an exclusive high-yield investment opportunity to the victim, claiming that the opportunity was only open to trusted acquaintances. So the victim took out VND500 million to invest.
Seeing that the income was getting higher, the victim invested more money. In the end, he paid a total of VND5 billion for the investment.
But when the victim tried to withdraw the profit, the woman asked him to pay a fee first. The victim hesitated, but the woman said it was just a very small step.
Gradually, the woman sent fewer and fewer messages and even refused to answer the phone. Later, the victim's investment account was blocked and the woman vanished from her social media.
The victim rushed to contact his bank and report the incident to the police, but unfortunately it was too late.
Everything presented by this so-called fund manager was a fake, from her identity to photos, a false image created just for the victim. The victim not only suffered financial losses, but also had to deal with psychological devastation.
This victim from Vietnam recognized how easy it is to fabricate a person's image online and understands how dangerous it can be to misplace trust. He said, “I share my story not for sympathy but to warn others seeking love online. Never let emotions override logic, and never send money to someone you have never met in person.”
“VND5 billion was a painful price for this lesson. But if my experience can prevent others from falling into the same trap, perhaps some good can come from my loss.”
